Default Spraying Urethane Paint over Lacquer Primer

Just finished the body work on my 46 Hudson Pickup.

It is currently all blocked out in red oxide primer.

I would like to paint it in a PPG Urethane base coat, clear coat.

Is there anything special I have to do to spray the Urethane over the Lacquer primer.

Thanks

the best thing to do is strip all that lacquer primer off and start over with a 2k primer or epoxy. The paint job is only as good as the foundation (which is majorly compromised now) But since I'm sure thats not in the cards I would epoxy seal then go from there with your paint. Lacquer will re-wet with the solvents and that is where your problem is. You will have to go easy with the sealer, you might have a major problem when you spray and it will wrinkle the primer. Just be aware of this. And good luck

prep and wetsands the same . i have a Show Car Right here in this Garage......beautiful , flaw-less eyeshocking Paint....turns every head away from $100,000 cars when it rolls through.

the foundation was 100% completely re-surfaced with Laquer Primer and Top Coated with House of Kolor BC and KBC b/c c/c.

Laquer Primer = $35 gallon

i would'nt ever recomend laquer primer for newbies though. it's only for the Old Veterans of it.

Lacquer primer under urethanes, NO PROBLEM!!! I've been building cars since I was 16, I'm 59 now! I used it then and I still use it today. Lacquer primer at $35 a gal versus 2K at $100+. Lacquer primer sandable in 15 mins, 2K sandable in 3 hours. Do the math. When lacquer primer is dry urathane reducer will not affect it. If you are worry about painting over it, apply a coat of Epoxy Sealer before you apply your base coat.

Underground, I am surprised at you for your advice. I can't believe you would tell someone to sand it all off. If you didn't like the lacquer primer, your advice should have been, "Apply a coat or two of Epoxy Sealer" If you don't know the product, DON'T BE GIVING ADVICE!!!!

Re-read what I said! I told him to seal with epoxy. I have repainted TONS of cars that were shot with lacquer primer. These people paid good money to have there cars done by someone else. EVERYONE of them you could take a razor blade and pull the paint off to bare metal or ATLEAST delaminate the color from the primer! EVERYONE. I have pictures of a 68 chevelle that we done that way! I did not paint these cars the first time, and I dont like lacquer because of this. This is MY experience with it and have been told by numerous painters the SAME thing. If you have had good results, then by all means keep it up. Oh yeah, since your an EXPERT in lacquer primer, what would cause lacquer primer to COMPLETELY blow off in sheets when a car was being blown off just prior to paint? The bare metal was w&g removed like it should before the primer was applied. The ONLY place it stuck was in the bodywork! Had a customer do his own body work and primer. Brought it in to paint and this happened. He was standing there when it happened! And WHERE can you get a gallon of primer for $35.00!? The CHEAPEST it is where I live is $58.00 +$25.00 for a gallon of lacquer thinner. So, to me, $90 for CRAP or $100 for 2k or epoxy primer, I'm going with the better materials!

Smile experts

I would simply like to say that a new member of this for forum i'm so far not impressed. For one thing i came here looking to get help painting my 68 barracuda. Well all i get so far is confused. The experts seem to more inclined to put each other down, and argue with each other. I'm sure that you must know that when someone is looking for help but find the EXPERTS disagreeing on PRIMER, that this would further confuse the rookie painter. Just tell us what you know and leave the rest to us. I know that you both are EXELLENT painters and I would love to have anyone of paint my car,IF I COULD AFFORD IT,but i can't.

Yea i agree with the last post. People dont need to bash each other over what primer to use, etc. The way i see it everyone has there own style and technique. And for people to come here rant and rave like they know everything is pretty juvenile. Not pointing anyone out. I learn something new everytime i paint. I try different products also. Big deal primer is primer its your foundation. So If you like lacquer primer ok use it. You like DTM epoxy use it. The whole thing is making sure that the primer is finished right to have a awesome finished product.

I've used laquer primer i agree it works fast. Kustom shops lacquer isn't as expensive as say 2k or DTM epoxy. But you get what you pay for also. I've used 2k and DTM. Which are both great but suck when you dry sand them makes a mess and takes forever. better off cutting it dry with like 180 grit paper. They all have there pros and cons.

Here is the way i see it dosen't matter if you spend $50 or $65 whatever it is for the lacquer or $119 for the DTM epoxy or 2k. Whatever works for you then use it. Now if time is a option. Use the laquer to work faster. But me in my opinion. I'd rather use DTM or 2k let it set up for a day or so and do what its gonna do. Then go to work on the prep. If i was in a hurry and wanted to just get it done like they did at macco when i worked there for about 3 days and quit cause it was a assembly line paintjob process. I'd use the laquer like they did.

So instead of goin to a post and bashing each other on oh this and that use what you want leave your opinion on it and maybe help new people on her asking questions by giving them advice or your opinion. Im not pointing no fingers out or anything but everyone has there own style and there own product likes and dislikes. Big FN Deal. Either way primer is primer and it has to be laid down and prepared right before any base coat is even thought about going down.

Have fun and experience with it. Like they say dont knock it till you try it. I think every time i ordered primer from kustom shop i ordered a different one to see how they worked and they all have there pros and cons.

When ever a paint or primer delaminates, it because of poor prep work. How many cars are on the road today, in car shows and in collections that were painted before 2K primer was available and their paint is holding up well. How many years have we used lacquer primer and still using it today, because it has worked fine for all these years. Look at all the cars painted in the 90's by the manufacturer with MODERN TECHNOLOGY PAINTS, with paint peeling off in sheets. So just because it's new technology, doesn't mean it's better. It just means it COSTS more.
